It was created by several emerging veteran artists and volunteers of the Vietnam Veterans Art Group (VVAG) that had been exhibiting veteran artwork beginning in 1979. In fact, it was the first officially recognized gay village in the United States. The VVAG’s original founding members included Sondra Varco, Rick Aztlan, Joe Fornelli, Ned Broderick and Richard Hackett with later contributions from Mike Helbing, Jim Moore, Neal Pollack and many more.At the time, traditional galleries and museums were unwilling to exhibit art about the Vietnam War that was considered controversial.
It’s in the suburb of Northalsted, and there are 11 gay venues in a small area, making for excellent bar hopping.

As it’s not that far from many hotels on our list, it’s absolutely worth a visit if you have two or more nights in the city.
Chicago has the advantage of being right on Lake Michigan, and many tourist attractions are lake-based, including Navy Pier, which stretches right out into the lake and has a range of restaurants and bars.

The National Veterans Art Museum (NVAM) was officially established on Oct 12, 1986. The highest concentration, though, is in The Loop.
However, the VVAG worked with a local gallery space to host a temporary exhibit. Founded by UK-based mixed media artist Ruth Lapka, illo.roo celebrates the beauty of everyday life through vibrant, tactile artworks that capture the emotional heartbeat of special places.
