So as a celebrity you have a responsibility to speak up?
Absolutely. What I do is what I am and I would understand if someone only wanted to put out what they’re there to put out. But beyond that, there is a distinct power that comes with being a person who is not denied rights but still cares and will fight for them as if they were their own rights.
We’ve always done a lot with the issue and then we realized that if we had a big umbrella to funnel all this under, we could do so much more.
I don’t have to tell you this, but this next album will be a crucial one for you. That might sound pathetic, but the point is, we’re playing our biggest shows ever, people are really excited over this album and we’re gonna deliver best if we stay here.
But now, in 2013, we have all the information and we’ve seen the effects of homophobia and we’ve seen the effects of denying citizens rights. Often it is that way. Connecting all the dots is a huge thing and the difference between people being like, “Yeah, I think gay people should be equal” versus really making a big deal out of it and really thinking about it when they vote.
That’s part of the reason why I feel so drawn to the gay community in general – the very fact that there’s an opposition in general that creates an amazing community within the gay community. Constant and frequent doesn’t mean it’s ok. Not only did he executive produced the soundtrack for this year’s groundbreaking gay teen rom-com Love, Simon, but the Bleachers frontman co-founded The Ally Coalition (TAC) with his sister Rachel — a nonprofit dedicated to raising funds and awareness in support of equality.
“When we first started [TAC], we were trying to find our footing.
It kind of doesn’t matter what you want to do or what you’re trying to do; something good is gonna happen.
Was the song written with Love, Simon in mind?
Yeah, there’s certain pieces and different moments. Being straight and standing up for gay rights is a statement that says “this is everyone’s issue.” We are not all free unless we are all free.
There have been many times in history where things that were frequently happening were extremely not ok.
I think now it’s so important to focus and feel things, whether it’s a wonderful thing or horrible thing — to actually feel things and to actually take them in.
They just think, “Oh, they have civil unions; we have marriage – what’s the difference? Was finding LGBTQ talent an important consideration while curating this project?

According to a statement posted to social media, Antonoff plans to “spend a large part of the next chapter of my life bringing these spaces to people who wouldn’t have access to them,” beginning with “working through the Ally Coalition to build studios in LGBTQ+ youth shelters.”

The specifics for this plan aren’t quite ironed out yet, but Antonoff explained that it would involve having “a network of engineers that we will fund who will train people at these sites.” From there, the hope is “to build these spaces, pay for maintenance and engineering, and let the centers give out the time slots for people to use them.” After that, “we can start to expand...

We’d be cheating on our audience. If the government decided tomorrow to strip Jews or African Americans of certain rights, no one would say, “How did you get involved with Jews’ human rights, blah blah blah?” It would just be this universal violation that we would all be up in arms about.
And how about The Ally Coalition that the band and your sister, Rachel, recently formed – is that coming with you, as well?
The Ally Coalition, or TAC as we call it, will be with us for the foreseeable future. So we started The Ally Coalition, which is a nonprofit. It’s obviously all through Simon’s lens, but I want to stay focused on that theme.
I feel so lucky that film, and “Alfie’s Song,” and all of it — I feel like people understood what it was.
