For instance, both Scorpia and Huntara have qualities we typically associate with masculinity, including their strength and size. Scorpia has pretty much confessed her love for Catra, and Catra like, didn't run away, which is the equivalent of a proposal for that maladjusted kitty with an attitude-y. Early in the series, we meet Spinnerella (ND Stevenson) and Netossa (Krystal Joy Brown), an adorable lesbian princess couple who hold hands and show affection on screen.

In other words, misogyny is dead.

The other way queerness manifests in the series is through the presentation of various types of characters who use she/her. Later that night, Adora sneaks into the Whispering Woods and feels like it is very familiar to who she was, before she was adopted into the Horde as an orphan. Never does any character–even a villain–neglect to use another's correct pronouns or shame them for being in a same-sex relationship.

It is later revealed that the Horde’s purpose is to eradicate the Elemental Princesses and “bring peace to Etheria”. It is a re-boot of the 1980s original She-Ra, but with a more explicitly queer cast and storyline.

I remember coming across this show on Netflix and immediately dismissing it as a childish cartoon – but as I started watching the show, I could not stop binging it till I was done with all 5 seasons.

She begins to approach everything with a childlike wonder, almost convincing Glimmer to reconsider her coldness.

The good times do not last, as the Horde suddenly lays siege upon Thaymor and Adora is horrified and runs off to stop her comrades, apologising to Glimmer and Bow, asking them to evacuate everyone. She is successful in scaring them away but faces harm to herself as she’s safely evacuated by Madame Razz as well as Horsey!

Horsey telepathically tells Madame Razz to tell Adora that his name is Swift Wind, and that he is connected to her psychically, as he is her steed.

We see that Adora is willing to help strangers in need, to give up her safety to protect those more vulnerable than her and she flies off to Bright Moon to reveal herself to Queen Angella.

Whether or not Smith will be able to, or even plans to follow up this reveal is still up in the air, but a sign that perhaps She-Ra and He-Man can reunite once again. She Ra began with the same battle–to insert as much queer content as possible without bothering the executives. We can see that this is a twisted, toxic affection Catra holds, one that many queer youths are familiar with when we come across toxic family and friends that are unwilling to accept our identities and will inflict pain upon us to “conform.”

They eventually part as Adora is saved by Bow and willingly turns into She-Ra for the first time, with Glimmer trusting her with the Sword – and lays waste to the Horde’s forces till they retreat.

Only Catra realizes that She-Ra is Adora as she backs away into the dark smoke and out of sight as Adora is comforted and taken back home by her new friends, Glimmer and Bow.

Oh, and a random horse joins them – yes, he is an important character but I will introduce him in a bit.

Episode 3: Taking Accountability, Becoming A Hero

In Episode 3, the trio (and the “Horsey!” As Adora names him) return to Bright Moon as Glimmer hides Adora away in her room, asking her to turn into She-Ra in front of Queen Angella.

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power brings the subtext of the original stories and makes those implications explicit, creating a gay icon in She-Ra herself, a character that serves as a reminder of both strength and pride that people in the community can rally around.

This icon status has been made clear by the series’ dedicated and predominantly LGBTQ+ fanbase, which continues to grow even four years after the show’s conclusion.

In 1985, She-Ra made her debut in the animated film He-Man & She-Ra: The Secret of the Sword, where she is introduced as Adora, a soldier of the Evil Horde who upon learning of her own destiny and lineage, takes up the Sword of Protection and rebels against the Horde, becoming the hero She-Ra. At the same time, the princesses constantly fight against all odds to overthrow terrifying authoritarian regimes.

Meanwhile Catra deals with the responsibilities of becoming a Force Captain in Adora’s place, facing both physical challenges from She-Ra and the rebellion and internal conflict as she deals with her abusive mother figure Shadow Weaver (Lorraine Toussaint) and boss Hordak (Keston John). If you're already overwhelmed by the pastel queer goodness, all I can say is hold onto your butts.

In addition to the implied queerness of these main cutie pies, there are a few explicitly queer couples.

A year after the show’s conclusion, Netflix would release two new He-Man adaptations, the first being Masters of the Universe: Revelation, helmed by Kevin Smith, who has gone on record as wanting to do a She-Ra crossover with Stevenson someday.
