“I ran one of the best races of my life just from releasing that weight and not having to carry that burden anymore,” Bracy says. - DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

In 2020, CeCé initially qualified for the Olympic trials in June but was deemed ineligible due to one of the various pieces of legislation targeting transgender women in sports.

Supporting our club helps us with the purchasing of water for Saturdays, subsidizing club events, volunteering and the upkeep of newsletter and website requirements. And by sharing her story, she wants to combat stereotypes and raise awareness to the importance of intersectionality within the running community.

“Intersectionality is not so much here to make people feel like we're so different, it's to acknowledge the differences so we can actually acknowledge the human, the layers to the human,” Snell says.

When the pandemic hit and many of his races were canceled in 2020, he didn’t want to let his training go to waste, so he took on the challenge of completing the Ice Age Trail in record time, running the 1,147 miles in 21 days, 13 hours, 35 minutes. “I'm very thankful for running, for having a built-in support network of people that I knew would accept me no matter what, but also having something that encouraged me to believe that I could be whatever I wanted to be, to believe that I had daily representation of what it was like to be courageous.”

It was during the Runners Alliance virtual workshop “Running Proud,” that Llano first learned his coming out story had inspired Bracy.

In 2013, Chris founded transathlete.com, a “resource for students, athletes, coaches, and administrators to find information about trans inclusion in athletics at various levels of play.”

Coree Woltering is an ultra-runner that initially entered the field as a sprinter, running the 400m and 800m in middle school through college.

“If we start with looking at ourselves, figuring out what we can do ourselves, opening our hearts, and having a willingness to listen to someone else's experience—and maybe you don't agree with it, but maybe you just need to be educated on it,” Llano says. He created transathlete.com, a website with resources for students, athletes, coaches, and administrators.

Now, they are focusing their efforts on inclusion within the running community. Since then, he’s placed 3rd in The Dunes 100 in 2017, 4th in the Superior 100 Mile in 2018, 2nd in the American River 50M and Quicksilver 50k in 2018, and 1st in the Superior Spring 50k in 2019. “That's something that we deal with and that's something that is part of the process, and I think that's why these conversations are so important to be having.”

Prior to the virtual workshop, Llano noticed several comments on social media in which followers asked why the topic of LGBTQ+ runner experience was important to discuss.

Welcome!

Frontrunners & Frontwalkers Phoenix is a running and walking club for the LGBTQ+ community and allies having an interest in health and well-being through staying active and coming together with social events. Fun fact, our COO Briana has had the privilege of being coached by Matt in the past and working with him on projects when he ran for the professional running group NAZ Elite.

They started the Pride5k in 2020, a race where people “come together and run a 5k to show LGBTQ+ young people that they are seen, that they belong, and that they have visible allies everywhere who love and accept them.” The first two years, the 5k was virtual, but this year, there is an in-person option in Flagstaff, AZ.

The Pride 5k raises money for The Trevor Project, an organization providing suicide prevention and crisis intervention for LGBTQ+ youth.

Chris Mosier is an all-American duathlete and 6-time member of Team USA. In 2015, he was the first known transgender man to represent the US in an international competition, as well as the first transgender athlete to qualify for the Olympic trials as the gender they identify with.

I want to know about them just as much as I want them to know about me.”

Mosier says the bill is “devastating” for transgender women and girls—and all women and girls.

“As somebody who grew up playing girls and women's sports, I know that if something like this was on the books when I was 14—to think I would have to get a pelvic exam to be able to play basketball with my friends—I just probably would not have played sports,” Mosier says.

Andraya is one of three transgender athletes that the Hulu documentary, Changing The Game, focuses on, as they have to navigate athletic competition at the same time as advocating for their right to be there.

Addie Bracy

“There’s a difference between not discriminating and being actively inclusive, and we want to encourage the action part.”

In the last year and a half, Bracy and Conner have created a network of OUTrun chapters that host group runs and advocate for LGBTQ+ communities around the country.

Pride Month is a time to celebrate and support the LGBTQ+ community, but it is also a time to remember how much further we still need to go for equality. The measure can also trigger an investigation into an athletes’ genital makeup. He ran his first marathon at age 15, was the youngest runner at age 24 at the Badwater 135 in 2018, placed 2nd at the Tahoe 200 and set the unsupported Fastest Known Time on the Wonderland Trail in 2020, and placed 2nd at the Javelina Jundra 100 in 2021.
