The term has gained popularity in recent years, and while it is used in the context of heterosexual, gay or bisexual relationships, research across the Western world shows that age-gap relationships are far more prevalent among gay and bisexual men than any other group. Writers need that.

If you’re writing queer stories, don’t stop at Gen Z.

Older Gays Matter, so Reach across the generations. Then there’s the matter of generosity with their time. Yet they overcame those odds to become what they currently are.

You can appreciate where they are when you understand what they have been through. Unfortunately, the HIV bug was going to the US, spreading like wildfire among American gay men.

The fact that the virus spread faster through anal sex than vaginal sex didn’t seem to help matters.

So will your life.

Not every older gay man wants to be a mentor or a muse—but many are just waiting for someone to care enough to ask.

Maybe, just maybe, the next chapter of your story starts with a freezer aisle, a room to rent, or a slice of Dutch apple pie gone wrong.

Because every now and then, the best stories don’t begin with “Once upon a time.” They begin with “Hey…you okay?

For those older gays living with the virus, they face the constant fear of being stigmatized by everyone, including their comrades in the gay community. 

This is probably why many older men don’t disclose their HIV status to casual acquaintances and lovers. Start one. When we grow older, we realize that most of the things we deem life and death are not as important as we thought.

Write scenes where someone fumbles the pronouns, then learns. Let them surprise you. Both of them working together provides a better-looking and wholesome gay community. 

Homophobia and Homonegativity

In recent times, people have been careful about what they say and do because there are repercussions for their actions.

Appreciating these older gay men is the first step in ending their stigmatization. Live it. Even so, the tapestry isn’t complete without the older threads. Well, there are worse than connecting with an older man. They are more interested in a sedate and more fulfilling relationship. Wrote poems. This generation, usually known as baby boomers, is often derided as being out of touch with current realities and responsible for most of the problems millennials and Gen Zs face.

We agree that there might be some truth in this, but younger people will be surprised to learn that older gay men also have some grouse with their generation.
